When can I apply for Medicare?

When You turn 65. If you are disabled for 24 months and are under the age of 65, you will automatically qualify for Medicare. Generally you have a 7 month window to sign up for Medicare as you turn 65. 3 months prior to your birthday month, your actual birthday month and 3 months after your birthday month.

When can I apply for Social Security?

You can apply for social security at the age of 62 although it is not advised unless financially necessary. If you can hold out until age 70, you receive an 8% bump in your monthly stipend. No financial institution out there is paying 8%!!

What is the difference in the types of Plans offered?

There is Original Medicare which is part A (hospital services) and Part B (Dr. services). These are 80/20 plans. Medicare will cover 80% and you are on the hook for 20% of all costs. You must also sign up for a drug plan when first eligible for Medicare or you will be penalized for a long time.

What other Medicare Plans are available?

There are Part C plans which are Medicare Advantage plans offered by private companies. They cover A & B and add in extra services as well as a built in drug plan (Part D) and sometimes vision and dental services. These are generally HMO plans.

What Are Medicare Supplement Plans?

These are generally PPO plans that will cover the 20% you are on the hook for with original Medicare. While a little more costly than an advantage plan (part C) they offer a great deal of flexibility for the beneficiary in not being locked into a network.
